Walter and the raised fence
Huskies

What are the huskies doing this week? – Where is Walter? Siberian Huskies need good fences!

My favorite game is “Where is Walter?” We didn’t have this game with Disney, so it makes me question why we rolled the dice to get a second husky.

Our 4-foot fence was adequate for Disney, but Walter is head and shoulders taller than she is and a good 30 pounds heavier. He is a big husky! He has gone over our fence several times.

Siberian Huskies need good fences!

I raised the fence by 18 inches and thought I was good. Until…

He found a weakness in the chain link fence and went under. We’ve had to stake it down in several spots and to be super secure, I have put cinderblocks outside the fence next to the road.

He then managed to squeeze out between the side of the house and the post to the gate. That time he took Miss Disney with him, I was seen running through the neighborhood, screaming at them to come back.

How did I raise the fence by 18 inches?

I get this question a lot. I found these on Amazon.
Fence Extentions

They attach to the top of a chain link fence. Then I took fencing and zip-tied it to the post and the fence. I am 5’2,” and while these made our 4-foot fence slightly taller than I am, I didn’t have any issue at all installing them. They have been up for almost a year, and we have had no problems with them.

If you have a chain link fence, see how big your top bar is and match it to the size you need. We also use the zip-ties that are made for outside and UV resistant. Important here in Texas! Amazon tells me I ordered 9 of the packs. I have one unopened downstairs for “just in case.” But I highly recommend you don’t skimp on that step!

Here is Walter in front of his raised fence in action. This is a corner of the fence. But you can see how the fence extenders just blend in.

Walter and his freedom

So, Walter is only allowed outside off the lead if I am close enough to hear him make a run for the fence. He usually escapes when trying to make friends with people walking their dogs.

If I can’t be close enough to a window that faces the backyard, he isn’t allowed that much freedom.

And still, I play the game, “Where is Walter?”

If he goes around either side of the house, I can’t see him, and I about have a heart attack, thinking that I will have once again to chase him.

If you own a husky, be prepared. They have a sturdy fence. They can’t go over and can’t go under. Please make sure there are no spots where they can squeeze through.

So what do you do?

Above all else? Be prepared for what happens if they do get out! Have them chipped! We also have tags on them with our name and number and an apple air tag.

And before you ask, yes, have a backup! Those days, puppy Walter chewed off his tags and harness.

The key is to invest in the time to train your dog, husky or otherwise.

Now, Walter is still very much a puppy. And it is in a dog’s nature. Disney is a mature dog and an angel compared to Walter, but she has followed him out of the fence before.

What I am trying to put out there is to train them but never present the opportunity for escape. Make sure there isn’t a way for them to escape. Keep an eye on them. Make sure they are chipped and wear tags in the event they get out.
