Adding more to the Urban Homestead
I just realized that I never introduced Harry and Hermione to you on the blog!
Harry and Hermione are German Angora bunnies!
What did I need bunnies for, you ask?
I am digging this self-sufficient homesteading thing. But something inside of me can’t do chickens. I just can’t—sorry chickens.
But bunnies?
Bunnies, I can do!
What role do they play here on our Urban Homestead?
So what do these bunnies contribute to the “homestead”?
Their droppings are wonderful for the garden! Those little round nuggets can be added straight to the soil. Bunny manure is full of nitrogen and phosphorus. It breaks down quickly, so you can add it to the soil. The plants love it!
I have had my two little fertilizer producers for about a month now and have lots and lots of fertilizer, so I will start putting it in a compost bin.
My only problem is keeping the huskies out of it. They seem to think the rabbits are like little Pez dispensers!
I mentioned before that these bunnies are German Angoras. They are raised for their fur. Just like a sheep, you shear them. These bunnies will be sheared every 3 months or four times a year. Then their fur can be sold. Either raw, carded, or spun into yarn.
I will be perfectly honest; I am so excited to have bunnies!
They have a bunny run so they can spend time outside. And Harry (the grey one) loves the green grass! Hermione, the fawn, loves the freedom of running around. She’s only ever been in a cage and adores being outside!
They were born in January, and it’s almost time to give them their first haircut! So stay tuned to that adventure!
I would be amiss if I didn’t mention where we got these babies! Check out Rowdy Ranch. When we picked these two up, she even had baby goats! Maybe next year???
