February in the garden (central south Texas edition)

It’s February, and here is what is happening in the garden.

First off, this is my first year doing this. I have taken classes galore, but this is the first time I have put it into practice!

Here where we are, it has gotten cold a couple of times. Even last night, it got freezing. But overall, it isn’t that cold. We have cold snaps, for lack of a better word.

This past week I cleaned out the asparagus bed. We had planted those years ago, and they were sadly neglected. I hope to have some of those come up this year, weed-free!

What we are growing

We also have our garlic growing! I can’t wait for the year to harvest those!

We grew broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, cabbage, and chard in one bed. The first time it got really cold, I covered them. They didn’t like that one bit! So the next time, I left them to the elements, and they thrived!  See, I am learning!

This is a new experience for me, being able to grow all year long. Many of you know I grew up on the border of PA/NY. It’s cold and snowy. So this first year of doing this is eye-opening!

One of our favorite places to get seeds and supplies is The Natural Gardner in Austin. They have a month-by-month of what needs to get planted!

What we are planning to grow

I will start my tomatoes, cucumbers, and pepper seeds this week. We have a beautiful sunroom that I will set up to get those seeds an excellent start!

I am not going all out this year, as I am fairly new to all this. We want to plant stuff that we have grown and maybe one or two new things. I have three nice new raised beds to work with.

One of the things I am super excited about growing is herbs! We do have lavender and several rosemaries planted with our broccoli. I have plans for stevia, some mints (outside of the big beds, in their own space), and different basils, and we shall see what else the Natural Gardner has for me. One bed will be entirely for just herbs!

So while I am active in the garden, it seems that February is a time of planning what I will do this first part of the Texas growing season while maintaining and harvesting my winter crops.
