squirrels and fruit trees

We lived in Asheville, NC, for a year. We had a beautiful peach tree in the backyard. If you know me, you know I am not fond of peaches, but my husband loves them. He waited for all the glorious peaches to ripen and…

He didn’t get even one peach.

Those stupid squirrels ate them all!

Since then, no matter where we have lived, it has been a battle between our produce and the squirrels.

When we moved in 10 years ago, we planted a pear tree and a fig tree. Every year the pear tree has beautiful blossoms! This year we had so many of them! But not once have we gotten a fig or a pear. It is somewhat depressing. But not this year! I will win this battle!

I saw a hack online and ran to Amazon. No, not an owl, but that is the next purchase.

No, not hanging CDs. I gave those all to Goodwill, so I have to go and buy some old ones for that to work.

No, what I found was wrapping each one of the fruits in organza bags.

These little bags were under $10 for 100. I think after doing the pear and the fig tree, I need a second batch. I may also try to put my tomatoes in some bags to keep them from the birds.

I know my trees now look a little funny. To be honest, it was quite a bit of work too.

The thing is, if I can get fruit from my trees, it will be worth all that work!

Have you tried this? Do you have another method to keep the squirrels out of your fruit trees? Please let me know! I am desperate!
